Laser Settings for Leather (Vegetable-Tanned)

Can you laser engrave leather?

Yes — but only vegetable-tanned leather. Chrome-tanned leather (most fashion and upholstery leather) releases toxic chromium compounds under the laser, including the carcinogen hexavalent chromium. Buy from a supplier who states the tannage.

PrepPreparation & technique

Lightly dampen the surface before engraving for a crisper, less scorched mark. Weight the leather flat — it never lies flat on its own.

⚠ SafetyVeg-tan smells strong under the laser but isn't toxic; chrome-tan is dangerous. Faux 'vegan' leather is often PVC — never laser it unless the base is confirmed PU.
