Why Polycarbonate Doesn't Belong in a Laser

Can you laser cut polycarbonate (Lexan)?

No. Polycarbonate absorbs infrared so strongly that laser machine windows are made from it — it's literally designed to stop the beam. In the cutting area it yellows, catches fire, and gives off benzene-related fumes. It's regularly mistaken for acrylic, which is the real danger.

Hides inWhere it turns up

Machine guards, 'unbreakable' glazing, safety glasses, riot shields, and clear sheet sold without a material name. Tell them apart: polycarbonate is denser than acrylic and sinks faster in water; acrylic cracks when bent, PC folds.

InsteadSafe alternatives

Cast acrylic — it looks identical and cuts beautifully.

If it happensAccidental exposure

Stop and ventilate. Check the lens — PC smoke films optics quickly.

⚠ The golden ruleNo safety data sheet, no material spec, no cut. When in doubt, leave it out.
